Today, you’ll probably notice that most water treatment technologies have limitations – despite how good they are. They cost a fortune, they don’t last long and are often difficult to maintain. Not to mention their inability to combat certain disease-causing microorganisms.
If you truly want to protect your water from dangerous contaminants and pathogens, you should consider adding KDF (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) process media to your whole house water filtration unit.
KDF process media improve water treatment performance by safeguarding, and in some cases replacing, your existing filtration/purification technologies. Many manufacturers, hospitals, restaurants, consumers, and others are already using this exceptional water treatment technology to safely reduce or remove harmful components from their water.
To give you the scoop, we’ll cover what KDF process media are, how they work and why they’re important for whole house water filters.

KDF Media

What are KDF process media?

KDF process media are a unique combination of copper and zinc that reduces contaminants in water using an oxidation/reduction (redox) process.

How do KDF process media work?

KDF process media use a redox reaction to remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide and other harmful compounds from water supplies by exchanging them with harmless components. They also remove other heavy metals such as nickel, mercury, and copper by simply bonding to the KDF media.
Moreover, KDF process media have a mild effect that helps kill dangerous micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, algae, etc.) and may prevent the buildup of limescale in your plumbing and appliances.
KDF process media control microorganisms in two ways:
  1. An electrolytic field forms during the exchange of electrons in the redox reaction, which destroys most microorganisms.
  2. After catalyzing the formation of radicals and peroxides in certain circumstances, the radicals can hinder the microorganisms’ ability to function.
Now that you know how KDF process media work, let’s look at their importance in whole house water filters.

Why are KDF process media important for whole house water filters?

Whole house water filter systems are among the most popular water filtering solutions in the industry. But despite their cost-effectiveness and ability to produce high-quality water, they’re usually not effective enough in some areas of water treatment.
Here’s how KDF filters can fill those gaps:
  • Effectively remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide and other heavy metals
KDF media prevent impurities from entering public facilities, homes, and businesses. In fact, they’re said to remove over 99% of free chlorine. Chlorine removal frees up granular activated carbon (GAC) to better remove organic contaminants, which affect water quality.
Because KDF is more efficient at removing chlorine from water, it provides better-tasting water for you and your family as well as a 50-percent reduction in your chlorine-removal costs.
KDF process media also remove iron and hydrogen sulfide by changing soluble iron into insoluble ferric hydroxide and hydrogen sulfide into insoluble copper sulfide. These new byproducts are strained through the filter bed, then periodically removed by backwashing.
Other heavy metals such as lead, copper, and mercury are removed from the water supply by bonding to the KDF media.
For medical labs and other facilities where purified water is essential, KDF media is a must. Whether used alone or in combination with existing water treatment technology, KDF media remove contaminants from feedwater entering hospitals, and from places that discharge to public water treatment systems.
  • Household water treatment
If your home has a whole house water system, KDF media will remove chlorine and other impurities from the water supply at the point-of-entry. Alternatively, chlorine can be eliminated by incorporating KDF media into shower filters, into cartridges at the tap and at other point-of-use applications. As a result, hotels, restaurants, and homes benefit from better tasting water with less odor as well as less wear and dings on clothes, towels, napkins, bedding and other items that are laundered there.
  • Control microorganisms
KDF media control the buildup of bacteria, algae, fungi, and other microorganisms found in GAC beds, carbon filters and other organic based media. By doing that, KDF media significantly extend the life of the carbon without the need for chemical treatment; Thus, reducing costs and protecting the environment.
  • Extends the life and efficiency of carbon-based systems
Basic activated carbon filters do not handle particulate material very well. However, we use the highest quality coconut shell carbon filters, which contain tiny pores that trap and eliminate similarly sized contaminants. KDF process media enhance the performance, extend the life, reduce the maintenance and lower the cost of carbon-based systems.

HOW TO STERILIZE WATER DURING AN EMERGENCY Would you know how to sterilize water during an emergency? Although uncommon in Canada, hurricanes, floods and even water mains breaking can interrupt regular water service. Typically, in an emergency situation, the authorities recommend that you drink sterilized water, or bottled water, to avoid any disease-causing microorganisms and harmful pollutants that could be in your water. The following steps will help you sterilize water that you do have available. In the event of an emergency situation, use only sterilized water for drinking, cleaning, preparing meals, cooking, and brushing your teeth. Just a few drops of contaminated water is enough to make you sick. Methods to Sterilize Water: 1 ) Boiling:  If have power during the emergency situation, boiling your water is a good way to sterilize water. Let cloudy water settle. You can filter it through a coffee filter or paper towel to get rid of sediment. Bring the water to a...

How To Choose A Water Softener

We often heard home owners asking on how to choose a water softener for their home as the selections are overwhelmed. There are so many types, functionalities and brands of water softener in America. Contradicting information on the same type of softener are often seen online which made selections even harder. To simplified the selection process, we have summarized the important elements that you need to consider while choosing your first water softener. Facts That You Need To Know About Softener Some basic facts that you need to know about water softener. It is not water purification system  unless stated otherwise Most whole house water softeners are standalone products and do not remove contamination. Salt based and salt free softener  in the market. Salt based softener required constant refilling of salt and it required electricity to power up the softener system. For salt free softener converts the hard water into crystal particles that isn’t sti...
