What is a TDS Controller in RO Water Purifiers?

Livpure RO Water Purifier - Envy Plus

If you research online before buying an RO water purifier, one term you will frequently encounter is TDS. It stands for total dissolved solids. TDS levels in a water sample determine whether the water is hard or soft. High levels of TDS mean that the water is hard and low levels of TDS mean that the water is soft.

What is TDS Controller?

The reverse osmosis process that is used to filter tap water in most home water purifier removes hard water elements and reduces the hardness of water by up to 90%. Which means if the input water has TDS of 700, the output water will have TDS close to 70. This is done by the TDS controller.

How does the TDS controller work?

The water that enters the RO purifier is divided into 2 parts. The water in Part 1 goes through the RO purification process which reduces the TDS and removes all inorganic impurities from it. The water in Part 2 goes through UF+UV filtration (depending on the specifications of the unit). While this water is purified, it does not lose the TDS count.
These two parts are then combined once more to form the output water. The amount of Part 2 water in the mixture is controlled by a valve that is connected to the assembly, thus controlling the TDS levels in the output water.
The TDS controller is paired with UV or UF filtration to ensure that the mixture is filtered to provide over 99.7% protection from water pollutants.
